MIramichi River Route

Stretching between the cities of Miramichi and Fredericton, the Miramichi River Route is a mere 182km, about a two-hour drive along Route 8. But the lure of this river steeped in history and the wonderful people who live by it could keep you enchanted for days.

The river itself is a Natural Wonder that draws visitors – particularly anglers - from around the world. This one of the world’s most renowned salmon rivers. Stop off in Doaktown to visit the Atlantic Salmon Museum, and take a break at the village of Blackville, renowned for the salmon flies created there.

But you don’t have to fish to catch the delights of this multi-cultural region. Take a break from driving and paddle a canoe or float downstream in a tube.

With roots in Mi'kmaq, Irish, Acadian and Scottish cultures, you'll find a lively mix of personalities on the Miramichi River Route. Many inhabitants have ancestors who worked in forestry, shipbuilding, fishing and tourism. As such, storytelling is deeply ingrained in the roots of this region. The people who live here will welcome you into their lives from the first "hello". Whatever their backgrounds, the local people can reel off our legendary ghost stories and fish-that-got-away tales with great zeal.

Music – particularly in the form of rollicking kitchen parties – is a real highlight: the city of Miramichi, for example, is famous for its foot-stomping, hand-clapping good time gatherings – plus festivals (including Canada’s largest Irish festival), kitchen parties, heritage sites and genuine hospitality.

Close to the city of Miramichi, the "Village of 30 Centuries" at Metepenagiag Heritage Park is a “must visit” for anyone wanting to learn about the (aboriginal) Mi’kmaq people.

At the other end of the river, you'll find the sophisticated delights of Fredericton, our capital, which crams in all the history and cultural attractions you could ask for.

The river is so intricately entwined in the traditions of this region that you, too, will feel the palpable connection. Scattered along this mythic river are some small towns, villages and even tinier communities that invite you to stop and explore. This is where you find the essence of the Miramichi River Route's homely hospitality.
