Exactly half-way between the Equator and North Pole, Deer Island is a naturalist haven with beautiful coastal vistas, beach walks, wonderful whale-watching, canoeing, camping, hiking, cycling and boat tours. The Bay of Fundy's currents swirl in great circles between Deer Island and the USA coast.
The Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere, is best seen from three hours before high tide, especially around new and full moons. It is best viewed from Deer Island Point. There are also several fishing villages to explore, and you can even go scuba diving. Or join the locals in a little old-fashioned beach combing!
Get there on the car & passenger ferry from Letete (near St. George). A ferry also connects Deer Island and Campobello Island.
