Running along the edge of the bay is one of the world’s most dramatic and dynamic coastlines with high cliffs, sea stacks and caves. Carved by thousands of years of erosion, spectacular giant pillars of stone reach up from the ocean floor at Hopewell Rocks.
At low tide, descend to the ocean floor and walk amongst the famous tree-tufted “flowerpot” rocks – bizarre sandstone formations sculpted by the endless churning of the waters.
As the tide comes in, this is also a wonderful place to sea kayak. Paddle your craft into sea caves that have been carved by the powerful tides, and pass cliffs embedded with ancient fossils.
When the tide is high, boats head out into the playground of the whales. Climb aboard and hold your breath. You could see the heart-stopping spectacle of a humpback whale breaching off the starboard bow.
To enjoy more of our wonderful coastal scenery, drive, walk or bike the Fundy Trail which connects to paths and stairways leading to pristine beaches and tumbling waterfalls, Precambrian rocks and towering cliffs: all along there are stunning views of the Bay of Fundy.
Or take a ferry to explore the fascinating islands of the bay. Head to Grand Manan Island - a 90-minute ferry trip from Black’s Harbour - for unspoilt natural beauty, solitary beaches, hiking trails, birdwatching, whale-watching, kayaking, cycling, lighthouses, rugged cliffs and scenic fishing villages. Experience presidential tastes and maritime splendour on Campobello Island, the beloved isle of the late US President, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Deer Island is a naturalist’s haven with beautiful coastal vistas, beach walks, whale-watching, canoeing, camping, hiking, cycling and boat tours. Lobster, salmon and herring fishing are the mainstays of the island economy. For another fascinating marine experience that will get your head spinning, see the “Old Sow”: just off Deer Island, it is the largest tidal whirlpool in the western hemisphere.
